MAY 1 HEADLINES
CLIPPERS GET PAST SULTANS, 7-3
MANTLE HOMERS TO BAIL OUT FORD
MAD DOG BULLPEN COLLAPSE LEADS TO 8 RUNS IN 9TH
PUIG HITS 3 RUN WALKOFF HR TO STUN HAMMERS
RECAPS: Clippers 7 Sultans 3 Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams all went yard, as the Clippers beat the Sultans by a score of 7-3. Schoolboy Rowe kept the Sultans off the board until the seventh, when Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby hit back to back doubles, as part of a three run inning. WP-Schoolboy Rowe(1-1) LP-Carl Mays(2-2). HR-Jackie Robinson(4), Lou Gehrig(2), Ted Williams(4).
Comets 4 Terrifics 3. Whitey Ford was trailing 3-1, after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Carl Furillo doubled, then scored on a Nellie Fox single. Later that inning, Mickey Mantle clubbed a two run blast, to give the Comets a 4-3 lead, which they would not relinquish. WP-Whitey Ford(3-0) LP-Ferguson Jenkins(1-1). HR-Mickey Mantle(10), Ernie Banks(6).
Peaches 9 Mad Dogs 7. The Mad Dogs appeared to have this one in the bag, with a 4-1 lead and only having to get three outs in the top of the ninth. But as Yogi said, it’s never over till it’s over. The Peaches exploded, or the Mad Dogs bullpen collapsed, depending on your point of view. Starter, David Wells, surrendered a single to Chief Meyers, then a two run homer to Frank Baker to get the crazy inning started. Mariano Rivera came in and after fanning the first batter, allowed two singles and a double. Billy Wagner took over and he gave up a single, got the second out of the inning, then allowed two singles and a triple to Baker, who’s homerun got the ball rolling. The Mad Dogs fought to the end, scoring three runs in their half of the ninth, but ultimately, fell short. WP-Walter Johnson(2-2) LP-Billy Wagner(1-1). HR-Frank Baker(3); Barry Bonds 2(3), Alex Rodriguez(3).
Hammers 7 Naturals 9. The hapless Hammers just can’t catch a break. Back to back homeruns by Willie Mays and Frank Robinson, against Koji Uehara, in the top of the ninth, put the Hammers ahead, 7-6. With both bullpens stretched to the max, the Hammers stayed with Larry Jackson, who had pitched the eighth in relief. In the last of the ninth, he got Dustin Pedroia for out number one, but Joey Votto singled, Miguel Cabrera walked, then Yasiel Puig slammed a three run, walkoff homer. The two teams are heading in opposite directions, as the Naturals have won six straight, while the Hammers have lost four in a row.
Every team has a doubleheader scheduled on May 2.
