HUBBELL BEATS SCHERZER TO STAY UNBEATEN

6 RUN SIXTH, SENDS MAD DOGS TO EASY WIN OVER COMETS

RED HOT FOSTER LEADS TERRIFICS PAST PEACHES

MCCOVEY HERO; RUTH GOAT, IN EXTRA INNING HAMMERS WIN

Clippers 5 Naturals 3. Carl Hubbell of the Clippers got the best of the Naturals’ Max Scherzer in this one. Both pitchers came into the game without a loss and both worked six innings. Ted Williams and Joey Votto each homered for their respective clubs. WP-Carl Hubbell(3-0). LP-Max Scherzer(3-1). HR-Ted Williams(10); Joey Votto(4).

Mad Dogs 7 Comets 1. Bob Lemon walked in two runs with the bases loaded, then Sammy Sosa slammed a three run homerun, as part of a six run, sixth inning, allowing the Mad Dogs to easily get past the slumping Comets, who have dropped three in a row. It was Sosa’s second homer of the day. Lemon helped his own cause by homering, for the Comets lone run. The first place Mad Dogs have won four straight. WP-Greg Maddux(1-2). LP-Bob Lemon(1-2). HR-Bob Lemon(1); Sammy Sosa 2(5).

Terrifics 8 Peaches 2. Few players in the league are hotter than the Terrifics, George Foster. He clubbed two more homeruns today and has four homers and ten runs batted in, for his last three games. The Terrifics added three more longballs to help Bob Gibson to the victory. WP-Bob Gibson(3-2). LP-Rube Waddell(2-0). HR-Frank Baker(4); George Foster 2(8), Reggie Jackson(2), Mike Schmidt(6), Rod Carew(2).

Hammers 5 Sultans 2. It’s tough to pin a win or a loss on a single player, but this comes close. For the winning Hammers team, Willie McCovey had a solo homer; an rbi single in the top of the ninth, to give his team the lead, then, in the top of the eleventh, he singled in two more runs. Babe Ruth, for the losing Sultans, struck out four times, twice with runners in scoring position, then committed a two base error in the top of the eleventh. WP-Sam McDowell(1-1). LP-Red Faber(0-2). HR-Willie McCovey(4).
