MAY 8 HEADLINES

SHUTOUTS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY IN THE LEGENDS LEAGUE

Dizzy Dean, Dazzy Vance and Ed Walsh all tossed shutouts today. Three of the four games were whitewashes. Here are the recaps:

Clippers 9 Hammers 0. Dizzy Dean, a good hitting, pitcher; not only fired a four hit shutout against the Hammers, he hit a homerun himself. Joining Dean in the long ball fun were: Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig. Lou Boudreau was hit by a pitch in the fifth and will miss one day. Phil Rizzuto came in as his replacement. Mad Dogs 7 Terrifics 2. This was the only game that wasn’t a shutout, but the first place Mad Dogs still had a pretty easy time defeating the Terrifics, 7-2. A Joe Morgan error in the fifth inning was costly, leading to three unearned runs. WP-Greg Maddux(2-2). LP-Bob Gibson(3-3). HR-Ken Griffey, Jr.(8), Mark McGwire(8); Joe Morgan(3).

Sultans 4 Naturals 0. Like Dizzy Dean, Dazzy Vance also posted a four hit shutout. It was the second such game pitched by Vance and his third complete game overall. Only one runner reached second base for the Naturals the entire game. WP-Dazzy Vance(3-1). LP-Max Scherzer(3-2).

Peaches 8 Comets 0. The Peaches’ Ed Walsh grinded hard and was rewarded with his first shutout win. He had to work out of several jams and allowed nine hits, but was able to go all nine innings without giving up a run. Wildfire Schulte banged out two homers to lead the offense.
