First, note that every regular catcher and shortstop had the day off in these games.

Naturals 6 Comets 3. The Naturals trailed Whitey Ford and the Comets, 3-1, heading into the top of the ninth. Ford, who had been solid all game, started to buckle, allowing a double to Miguel Cabrera and a single to Buster Posey, who pinch hit for Joey Votto. The Nats went to Elroy Face, who was completely ineffective. He gave up two more singles and a three run homerun, to starting catcher, Russell Martin. The five run rally pushed the Naturals to a 6-3 victory. WP-Javy Lopez)1-2). LP-Elroy Face(2-1). HR-Russell Martin(1).

Hammers 3 Terrifics 1. Bob Veale picked up his first win and his first complete game, as he tossed a stellar game against a tough team, defeating the Terrifics, 3-1. Veale surrendered a homer to Mike Schmidt, in the seventh inning, or he would have posted a shutout. The Hammers hurler allowed just three hits, while fanning ten. Frank Robinson and Del Crandall went deep, along with Roberto Clemente, who, had he had gotten a double, would have hit for the cycle. WP-Bob Veale(1-2). LP-Mickey Lolich(2-2). HR-Mike Schmidt(8); Frank Robinson(4), Roberto Clemente(1), Del Crandall(2).

Clippers 5 Mad Dogs 2. The streaking Clippers, who have won three in a row, knocked off the top ranked, Mad Dogs, 5-2, behind Carl Hubbell, who earned his fifth win, tying Steve Carlton of the Terrifics, for the league lead. Bill Dickey had a homer and three rbi’s. Jimmy Foxx tripled and Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams had a single and double each. The Mad Dogs got the most from their subs, with Jeter and Piazza both going yard. WP-Carl Hubbell(5-0). LP-David Wells(2-3). HR-Derek Jeter(2), Mike Piazza(1); Bill Dickey(2).

Peaches 10 Sultans 7. The Peaches outlasted the Sultans, 10-7. Three of the Sultans’ runs and two of the Peaches, were unearned. Eddie Collins scored three runs, along with Sherry Magee, who also homered. Collins also stole two bases. Jack Barry and Hal Chase each had a single and double. Babe Ruth homered and is quietly sneaking up on the leaders list. WP-Pete Alexander(1-0). LP-Wilbur Cooper(1-1). HR-Babe Ruth(11); Sherry Magee(7).
