Clippers 5 Terrifics 1. Dizzy Dean and the Clippers defeated Steve Carlton and the Terrifics, 5-1 and in doing so, not only handed the ace of the Terrifics his first loss of the year; but also won their seventh straight game, the longest winning streak of the year by any team. A four run, seventh inning by the Clippers was the Terrifics undoing, with three of those runs charged to Carlton. It was Ralph Kiner, who came off the bench to pinch hit for Dean, who was the hero, clubbing a three run bomb off Sparky Lyle, after Carlton had left two on base. George Foster returned to action for the Terrifics after a brief stint on the D.L. He had a double and a single and scored a run. WP-Dizzy Dean(5-2). LP-Steve Carlton(5-1). HR-Lou Gehrig(7), Ralph Kiner(2).
Mad Dogs 4 Hammers 2. The first place Mad Dogs took care of business by dispatching the last place Hammers, 4-2. Willie Mays returned to the lineup for the Hammers after missing a couple of games. He was hitless in four at bats. Barry Bonds’ three run smash off Bob Veale, in the top of the fourth, was the big blow for the Mad Dogs. WP-Greg Maddux(3-3). LP-Bob Veale(1-3). HR-Barry Bonds(8), Roberto Alomar(2); Roberto Clemente(2).
Comets 5 Sultans 2. The Comets scored five runs in the first off of Lefty Williams, then held off the Sultans for a 5-2 victory. The much needed win snaps a five game losing streak for the Comets. Ken Boyer and Gil Hodges both homered in the initial stanza for the Comets. The Sultans got long balls from Hornsby and Ruth. WP-Bob Lemon(3-3). LP-Lefty Williams(0-3). HR-Rogers Hornsby(6), Babe Ruth(12); Ken Boyer(5), Gil Hodges(5).
Naturals 1 Peaches 0. Max Scherzer, of the Naturals, was credited with a 1-0, shutout win, in a most unlikely way. The Peaches lost on an Ed Walsh wild pitch, which occurred in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Miguel Cabrera singled, then Robinson Cano followed with a second single, moving Cabrerra to third base. Walsh then uncorked a pitch which bounced past catcher, Roger Bresnahan, allowing Cabrera to score what would turn out to be the game’s only run. Walsh ended up going eight innings and allowing just the one run, in the loss. WP-Max Scherzer(5-2). LP-Ed Walsh(2-3).
