Clippers 5 Terrifics 4. Joe DiMaggio clubbed a pair of homers, including a three run blast in the bottom of the eighth, to help the streaking Clippers to a 5-4 win over the Terrifics. Mickey Lolich, headed into the eighth inning, with a 3-1 lead, but then allowed a single to Jackie Robinson and walked Ted Williams. The Yankee Clipper’s second clout of the game(he had a solo homerun in the first inning), put his team up, 5-3. The Terrifics got a run off Bob Feller, in the top of the ninth, to pull within one, but could get no closer. Red Ruffing notched the win in relief of Carl Hubbell, who pitched seven innings. WP-Red Ruffing(3-3). LP-Mickey Lolich(2-3). HR-George Foster(9), Reggie Jackson(10); Joe DiMaggio 2(5).
Mad Dogs 6 Hammers 2. With the Clippers hot on their heels, the Mad Dogs needed a win against the struggling Hammers and they got one, winning by a 6-2 score. David Wells grinded out a complete game win. He allowed two runs on thirteen hits, striking out six and walking just one. Base on balls just killed the Hammers. Three pitchers, Don Drysdale, Vern Law and Sam McDowell, gave up nine total walks. Drysdale has lost his last four decisions. WP-David Wells(3-3). LP-Don Drysdale(1-5). HR-Mark McGwire(10); Roberto Clemente(3).
Comets 5 Sultans 3. In the first of two walkoff wins, Mickey Mantle homered in the bottom of the ninth, with Nellie Fox aboard, to push the Comets to a 5-3 win. The Sultans had scored a run in the top of the ninth, to tie the game at three. Fox led off with a single in the Comets last at bats, but Urban Shocker quickly retired the next two batters. He wouldn’t retire Mantle however, who put the first pitch he saw, into the seats, for a thrilling win. WP-Elroy Face(3-1). LP-Urban Shocker(0-3). HR-Mickey Mantle(11).
Peaches 6 Naturals 5. Bryce Harper returned to action after a month on the shelf. He was quiet in his return, going 0-3, with a walk. Also, Sherry Magee was drilled in the first inning by Justin Verlander. Magee will be out at least three days. Rube Waddell and the Peaches fell behind early, as the Naturals tagged them for five runs over the first two innings. The tallies were courtesy of Miguel Cabrera, who belted a solo homerun in the first, then trumped that with a grand slam in the second, vaulting him into the league lead for homeruns. But the Peaches stuck with Rube, who settled down after the rough start, at one point, retiring 13 in a row. Meanwhile, the Peaches fought back with paper cuts, getting single runs in the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The run in the eighth was a solo shot by Wildfire Schulte, which tied the game at five all. Jonathan Papelbon quickly fanned Hal Chase and Ty Cobb, in the bottom of the ninth, but he could not get Honus Wagner, who clubbed the game winning homerun. WP-Chief Bender(2-1). LP-Jonathan Papelbon(0-1). HR-Miguel Cabrera 2(14); Wildfire Schulte(6), Honus Wagner(6).
The League is dark on May 20th, with no games scheduled.
