Clippers 9 Hammers 7. The red hot Clippers continued their winning ways, beating the Hammers, 9-7. They got to Sandy Koufax early, the lefty went just 1.2 innings, but four of the six runs he allowed were unearned, thanks to a rare, Willie Mays bungle. The Hammers weren’t ready to lie down however, as they battled back, getting a three run homer from Frank Robinson and later, a two run blast from Willie McCovey. But in the end, the Clippers prevailed, largely thanks to a monster game by Ted Williams. The Splendid Splinter homered twice, one a grand slam, scored twice and drove in six runs. Joe D went deep and Mel Ott delivered a pinch hit homerun. The Mad Dogs loss to the Naturals puts the Clippers in front by mere percentage points. WP-Lefty Gomez(1-2). LP-Larry Jackson(2-2). HR-Ted Williams 2(14) gs, Mel Ott(1), Joe DiMaggio(6); Frank Robinson(5), Willie McCovey(5).
Naturals 6 Mad Dogs 3. Bryce Harper belted his second homerun of his limited season, having been on the disabled list for a month. While seeing Bryce homer was nice, Troy Tulowitski’s ‘ three run smash in the bottom of the eighth off Trevor Hoffmann, was the back breaker, in his team’s 6-3 victory. Each starter, Roger Clemens and Clayton Kershaw, went seven innings. WP-Koji Uehara(2-1). LP-Trevor Hoffmann(0-1). HR-Alex Rodriguez(6), Mark McGwire(11); Bryce Harper(2), Troy Tulowitski(4).
Peaches 4 Comets 2. Eddie Collins led the way in the Peaches 4-2 win over the Comets. Steady Eddie was 3-4, hit his very first homerun of the year and scored three runs. Carl Furillo also got his first homerun of the season, in a losing cause. WP-Christy Mathewson(3-1). LP-Robin Roberts(3-5). HR-Eddie Collins(1); Carl Furillo(1).
Sultans 6 Terrifics 3. Babe Ruth was a double short of hitting for the cycle; George Sisler homered and Rogers Hornsby tripled, as the Sultans beat up on poor Tom Seaver, 6-3. Tom not so terrific, struggled again, allowing five runs in five innings, all earned. WP-Herb Pennock(4-4). LP-Tom Seaver(3-5). HR-George Sisler(3), Babe Ruth(13); Johnny Bench(5).
