MIKE SCHMIDT’S 3 RUN, WALKOFF HR STUNS LEFTY WILIAMS AND SULTANS

Clippers 6 Hammers 3. The Clippers scored three runs in the top of the eighth, all unearned, enroute to a 6-3 victory over the Hammers. Ron Santo, filling in for an injured Brooks Robinson, committed a pair of two base errors, leading to the fateful inning. This came after Luis Aparicio booted a ball in the first inning, with two outs. A walk to Jimmie Foxx put two runners on, then Lou Gehrig made the Hammers pay, with a three run blast. All six runs charged to Hammers starter, Bob Veale, were thus unearned. Willie McCovey had a homer for the Hammers. WP-Dizzy Dean(6-2). LP-Bob Veale(1-4). HR-Lou Gehrig(8); Willie McCovey(6).

Peaches 3 Comets 2 11inn. Ty Cobb and Hal Chase hit back to back doubles in the top of the 11th inning, as the Peaches edged the Comets, 4-2, for their fourth straight win. Both starters, Ed Walsh and Bob Lemon, worked their way out of several jams in this game. The Peaches took a 2-1 lead into the last of the seventh, when Ted Kluzewski tied the game with a pinch hit homerun. The game remained tied until Cobb led off in extra innings, smacking his second double of the game. WP-Vean Gregg(2-2). LP-Bob Turley(0-1). HR-Ted Kluzewski(2).

Mad Dogs 4 Naturals 3. Greg Maddux took a no hitter and a 4-0 lead into the seventh, but stumbled in the eighth, when the Naturals rallied for three runs. Billy Wagner was able to squash any further scoring and save the game for the Mad Dogs. Robinson Cano, who broke up the no hit bid with a single, also singled off Wagner in the eighth, scoring Miguel Cabrera with the Naturals third run of the game. For the Mad Dogs, Barry Bonds had a pair of two baggers and Barry Bonds homered. WP-Greg Maddux(4-3) LP- Max Scherzer(5-3). HR-Barry Bonds(13).

Terrifics 3 Sultans 2. The Sultans’ Lefty Williams was just two outs away from a 2-0 shutout win, when Rod Carew doubled. He retired George Foster on a groundout to shortstop and now was just one out from victory. His celebration was put on hold when Reggie Jackson hit an infield single, moving Carew to third, then the party was canceled altogether, when Mike Schmidt crushed a game winning, three run homerun. The stunning comeback could be seen in the disappointed looks on the Sultan players faces. Buck Weaver gave Pie Traynor a day off in this game. Traynor is in an 0-21 slump, but Weaver fared no better, going 0-4. Little Ray Chapman homered in defeat for the Sultans. WP-Sparky Lyle(3-1). LP-Lefty Williams(0-4). HR-Ray Chapman(3); Mike Schmidt(11).
