RESULTS OF MAY 24 GAME
Mad Dogs 2 Terrifics 1. After three days in second place, the Mad Dogs returned to the top of the standings, with a 2-1 win over the Terrifics, in the only game on today’s slate. It was a great pitcher’s duel between David Wells and Mickey Lolich, with each starter trading zeroes for seven innings. Relievers, Mariano Rivera and Goose Gossage each pitched a scoreless eighth, but in the top of the ninth, the Mad Dogs’ Mark McGwire belted a two run homer, his fourteenth of the season. That was the fifth consecutive game in which McGwire has homered, tying a Stratball record set by Ted Williams in my 1949 Red Sox Replay. The Terrifics made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, when Johnny Bench clubbed a one out, solo shot off of Rivera, but the reliever threw his cutter past Larry Bowa and pinch hitter, Rennie Stennett, to clinch the victory. WP-Mariano Rivera(1-1). LP-Goose Gossage(0-2). HR-Mark McGwire(14); Johnny Bench(7).
