JUNE 7
Hammers 10 Sultans 3
Hammers 3 Sultans 2 There were just two teams in action today. The Hammers took both ends of a doubleheader against the Sultans. The first game was a, 10-3 blowout, in which the Hammers got two homeruns from Willie Mays and another from Hank Aaron. Brooks Robinson had a 3-4 day, scoring three runs. WP-Sandy Koufax(3-5). LP-C.Mays(3-4). HR-Willie Mays 2(19), Hank Aaron(10).
The B squad game was a real thriller, as Burleigh Grimes was on the verge of shutting out the Hammers, 3-2, in the top of the ninth inning, when he walked pinch hitter, Willie McCovey, with one out. He then allowed a double to Vada Pinson, putting men on second and third. The Sultans brought the infield in and Grimes got a clutch strikeout of Cookie Rojas. With two out, the Sultans left Grimes in to pitch to Ron Santo, who made him pay, with a three run clout, putting the Hammers in front for the first time in the game. Vernon Law pitched the final three outs to earn the save. A fine effort from A squad regular, Joe Jackson, went for naught. Shoeless Joe was 4-4, with a homerun. WP-L. Jackson(3-3). LP-Burleigh Grimes(3-3). HR-Ron Santo(2); Joe Jackson(8).
