WILD 9TH INNING HIGHLIGHTS CLIPPERS WIN OVER TERRIFICS

JOE JACKSON’S TWO HOMERS LEAD SULTANS PAST COMETS

HONUS WAGNER’S ERROR IN 9TH COSTS PEACHES

MAD DOGS & HAMMERS COMBINE FOR 7 HOMERUNS

Clippers 5 Terrifics 3 Clippers’ starter, Schoolboy Rowe, entered the top of the ninth, with a 2-1 lead. He retired Johnny Bench for the first out, but then gave up a single to Rod Carew. Garry Maddox then doubled, with Carew scoring from first. Larry Bowa singled, plating Maddox, to give the Terrifics a one run lead. Red Ruffing came in and got the final two outs. It looked bleak for the Clippers, down a run and facing Goose Gossage in the bottom of the ninth. However, Lou Boudreau and pinch hitter, Mel Ott both singled. Gossage got Jackie Robinson to lineout to first, then Ted Williams ended the game suddenly, with a three run, walkoff homerun. WP-Red Ruffing(6-3). LP-Goose Gossage(1-3). HR-Reggie Jackson(14); Ted Williams(21).

Sultans 3 Comets 2 Joe Jackson led the way, belting a pair of homers, in the Sultans’ 3-2 win over the Comets. Carl Mays went the distance for the Sultans, earning his first complete game win. Struggling, Warren Spahn was the losing pitcher. He has dropped his last four decisions. WP-Carl Mays(5-4). LP-Warren Spahn(3-9). HR-Joe Jackson 2(12).

Naturals 4 Peaches 3 The Naturals scored three runs in the top of the ninth, all unearned, courtesy of a Honus Wagner error. All three runs were charged to Peaches’ starter, Ed Walsh. Like Warren Spahn of the Comets’, Walsh has lost his last four starts. WP-Adam Wainwright(4-2). LP-Ed Walsh(2-6). HR-Miguel Cabrera(23); Sherry Magee(12), Hal Chase(4).

Mad Dogs 6 Hammers 4 These two teams banged out seven homeruns, in a 6-4 Mad Dogs win. That falls one short of a house record for homers in a game, by both teams. The Mad Dogs remain one game back of the Clippers in the standings. WP-Tom Glavine(8-4). LP-Don Drysdale(2-8). HR-Chipper Jones(13), Mark McGwire(25), Sammy Sosa(11), Ken Griffey, Jr.(17); Hank Aaron(15), Frank Robinson(9), Willie Mays(23).

On June 20th, these same teams, which just played each other, will have double headers, beginning with the Terrifics at the Clippers. (Seaver 5-8) vs. (Parnell 5-5); (Blass 2-3 vs. Feller 3-0).
