Ted Williams broke a 7-7 tie by smashing a game winning, two run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning, as the Clippers defeated the Sultans, 9-8. Lou Gehrig added a pair of long balls in the slugfest. Stan Musial and Jimmie Foxx each doubled twice. For the Sultans, Pie Traynor had four hits, including a triple, while George Sisler had a homerun. WP-Red Ruffing(7-3). LP-Burleigh Grimes(2-5). Hammers 1 Naturals 0. MARICHAL NOTCHES 1ST SHUTOUT IN TWO WEEKS
The Hammers’ Juan Marichal tossed the league’s first shutout since Carl Hubbell pitched one for the Clippers on June 13th. The Dominican Dandy allowed but five hits and fanned 11 in the whitewash. Juan was the man at the plate as well, going 2-3 and scoring the game’s only run after tripling in the eighth inning. WP-Juan Marichal(4-4). LP-Jon Lester(3-9).
Comets 6 Terrifics 4. ROY SIEVERS WINS IT FOR COMETS WITH PINCH HIT WALKOFF HR.
Like Ted Williams for the Clippers, Roy Sievers won the game in dramatic fashion, belting a two run, pinch hit, walkoff homerun, giving the Comets a 6-4 victory over the Terrifics. Reliever, John Candeleria got two quick outs in the ninth, but then gave up a single to Ken Boyer and then the coup de grace to pinch hitter, Sievers. It was the B squader’s fourth homerun this year. Reggie Jackson returned to the lineup for the Terrifics, belting a homerun in his second at bat. WP-Early Wynn(3-0). LP-John Candeleria(1-2). Peaches 5 Mad Dogs 3. PEACHES GET TO .500 WITH FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN
The surging Peaches continue to climb up the standings, reaching the .500 mark after a slow start. They have won five in a row, their latest, a 5-3 dispatch of the Mad Dogs. First baseman, Hal Chase was the batting star, going 4-4, with a homer and two doubles. He scored once and drove in two of his teams’ five runs. A Chipper Jones error and two Trevor Hoffman wild pitches in the bottom of the eighth, put the Peaches in front to stay. WP-Chief Bender(2-1). LP-Trevor Hoffman(0-2).
