TWINBILL TALES JUNE 27 CLIPPERS WIN TWICE AGAINST SULTANS

Game one: Clippers 7 Sultans 6. The Clippers took the opener, winning a slugfest behind Carl Hubbell, who becomes the league’s first pitcher with double digit wins. Dazzy Vance also had a chance to get to ten wins, but the loss drops him to 9-4. It was anything but a pitcher’s duel, with the Sultans belting two homeruns, while the Clippers had three. Game two: Clippers 4 Sultans 1. Bob Feller led the B squad to a 4-1 win, by going the distance to earn his first complete game win. Bill Dickey had a double and a single, as did Jimmie Foxx, who helped out from the A squad, playing first base. WP-Bob Feller(5-0). LP-Red Faber(1-5).

MAD DOGS/PEACHES SPLIT; B TEAM ENDS PEACHES WIN STREAK

Game one: Peaches 5 Mad Dogs 4. Mad Dogs’ closer, Billy Wagner, blew a save in the worst possible way. With a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth, he allowed a double to Wildfire Schulte, a single to Chief Meyer, then walked Eddie Collins, loading the bases. The Dogs went to Trevor Hoffman, who promptly gave up a two run single to Heinie Zimmerman. Hoffman fanned pinch hitter, Harry Hooper, but Ty Cobb doubled in Collins with the winning run. Starter, Christy Mathewson allowed just five hits, but three of them were homeruns. The win was the sixth in a row for the Peaches. WP-Walter Johnson(9-5). LP-Billy Wagner(4-2). HR-Ken Griffey, Jr.(21), Chipper Jones(16), Sammy Sosa(16); Sherry Magee(15).

Game two: Mad Dogs 11 Peaches 1. The Mad Dogs put the Peaches win streak to bed, with an 11-1 rout. Mike Piazza had a four hit day, with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Craig Biggio, Derek Jeter and Albert Belle all had three hits. Belle and Juan Gonzales also went deep for the Mad Dog’s B squad team. On the mound, Al Leiter was brilliant, going the distance, on just five hits, while fanning nine. WP-Al Leiter(2-4). LP-Three Finger Brown(2-4). HR-Albert Belle(6), Juan Gonzales(4).
