Peaches 9 Clippers 3

The Peaches upset the first place Clippers in the opener, defeating them, 9-3. Birdie Cree, stepping in for an injured Ty Cobb, in centerfield, led the team, with a 4-5 day at the plate. Ed Walsh pitched seven plus inning, to earn the win. Lou Gehrig socked his 17th homerun for the Clippers. WP-Ed Walsh(5-6). LP-Mel Parcell(6-8). HR-Lou Gehrig(17).

Clippers 4 Peaches 2

The Clippers bounced back in game two, with a 4-2 win. Lefty Gomez grinded out a complete game win, a rare feat for a B team player. Stan Musial, who played first base for the B team, led the bats, belting a three run homer, in the bottom of the fourth. WP-Lefty Gomez(3-4). LP-Pete Alexander(2-3). HR-Stan Musial(18).

Comets 8 Hammers 4

The Comets won both games of their doubleheader with the Hammers, taking the opener, 8-4. A four run, fourth inning, sparked by a two run homer from Ken Boyer, put the Comets ahead to stay. Bob Lemon was in complete control until he faltered in the bottom of the ninth. Ernie Banks extended his hitting streak to 20 straight games. The Hammers rallied for four runs in that inning, but still fell far short of victory. WP-Bob Lemon(6-5). LP-Sandy Koufax(4-8). HR-Gil Hodges(9), Ken Boyer(9).

Comets 6 Hammers 5

The B squad game was much closer, with the Comets pulling out a 6-5 win. A Dick Groat error helped the Comets push two runs across in the top of the eighth. Roy Sievers helped out from the first line team and was terrific. He went 4-5, with a triple, run scored and four rbi’s. Yogi Berra smacked a homerun, as did Jim Gentile, for the Hammers. Terrifics 3 Mad Dogs 1 11 inn.

George Foster belted a two run homer in the top of the eleventh inning, to give the Terrifics a 3-1 win over the Mad Dogs, in the first of two games. Each starter, Bob Gibson and Greg Maddux, respectively, worked deep into the game, but ultimately, each ended with a no decision. Gibson pitched, perhaps his best start of the season. He went 9 innings, allowed just one run on three hits. He also fanned ten against four walks. Maddux pitched a full ten innings, giving up one run, on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one. Terrifics 12 Mad Dogs 4

The B squad completed the sweep, hanging a dozen on the Dogs. It set a new high for runs in a game by a B team. Graig Nettles blasted a pair of homeruns and Rice, Fisk and Concepcion also went deep. Nettles drove in five runs, Rice knocked in four. WP-Fergie Jenkins(3-3). LP-Kevin Brown(5-2). HR-Graig Nettles 2(5), Jim Rice(5), Carlton Fisk(2), Dave Concepcion(1); Juan Gonzales(5).

Naturals 6 Sultans 0 The Naturals swept their doubleheader, as they took both ends of their twinbill with the Sultans, who have now dropped four in a row. The A game opener saw Clayton Kershaw win a 6-0 whitewash against Herb Pennock. Kershaw scattered seven hits, while striking out six and walking just one, in the win. Robinson Cano led the offense, with a homerun, double and a single. Yadier Molina also had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Joey Votto added a homer and a single. WP-Clayton Kershaw(7-6). Naturals 2 Sultans 1

The Sultans’ Stanley Coveleski took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth and got two quick outs, but then stumbled, walking Paul Goldschmidt and Buster Posey. Miguel Cabrera hit an rbi single and Andrew McCutchen doubled, to put the Naturals up, 2-1. That ended up as the final score, as Adam Wainwright earned the complete game win for the Nats. Waino allowed but five hits, fanned seven and did not walk a single batter. WP-Adam Wainwright(5-3). LP-Stanley Coveleski(5-4).
