GAME RECAPS:
Comets 2 Peaches 0
Whitey Ford pitched his second shutout of the season, blanking the Peaches, 2-0. Though Ford allowed only two hits, he did walk four batters and hit two more. Roy Campanella’s fourth inning homerun was the difference offensively. WP-Whitey Ford(7-6). LP-Rube Waddell(4-7). HR-Roy Campanella(8).
Clippers 7 Hammers 6
The Clippers exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth, in a 7-6 comeback win over the Hammers. The Joe DiMaggio captained squad always seems to have a tough time against the cellar dwelling Hammers and today was no different. Hammers reliever, Jim Maloney was tagged for two doubles, two singles and a walk, as the Clippers put up the ninth inning four spot, then held off the Hammers, who plated their sixth run in the bottom of the ninth. Hank Aaron’s, two homer, five rbi day went for naught. WP-Red Ruffing(8-3). LP-Jim Maloney(7-4). HR-Joe DiMaggio(16); Hank Aaron 2(20), Willie McCovey(12).
Sultans 2 Terrifics 0 DAZZY VANCE NO HITS TERRIFICS
The Sultans’ Dazzy Vance joins Mudcat Grant as the only pitcher in Stratball history to throw a no hit game. Grant spun a 1-0 no hitter as a rookie against the Chicago White Sox in a 1958 replay. Dazzy’s gem was the first no hitter in the Legends League. Vance ended the Sultan’s four game skid in a big way, beating the Terrifics, 2-0, without allowing a single basehit. Vance fanned 11 and walked just 3, in the nine inning, no no. Babe Ruth’s league leading 30th homerun was the only runs of the game. WP-Dazzy Vance(10-4) no hitter. LP-Steve Carlton(8-6). HR-Babe Ruth(30).
Naturals 4 Mad Dogs 1
Jon Lester tossed his first complete game, defeating the Mad Dogs, 4-1. The loss drops the Dogs a full five games behind the league leading Clippers. Lester gave up just three hits, struck out nine and walked four, in the win. Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout both belted homers. Troy Tulowitski was hit by a Dean Wells pitch in the fifth . He had to leave the game and will miss two days. Elvis Andrus replaces him at shortstop. WP-Jon Lester(4-10). LP-Dean Wells(7-5). HR-Miguel Cabrera(27), Mike Trout(11).
