GAME RECAPS:
Peaches 4 Comets 3 BANKS TIES HIT STREAK MARK, BUT COMETS LOSE
Ernie Banks tied the 22 game consecutive hit streak set by Glenn Wilson(’83 Tigers), but the Comets dropped a 4-3 decision to the Peaches. Banks barely kept his hit streak going, scratching out an infield single in the fourth, to go 1-4 on the day. However it was Chief Meyers’ rbi double in the top of the ninth, which was the difference maker in the 4-3 win. Mickey Mantle did all he could in the loss, going 3-4, with a single, double and homerun. WP-Christy Mathewson(7-2). LP-Early Wynn(4-2). HR-Mickey Mantle(25).
Hammers 2 Clippers 1 HAMMERS BEAT CLIPPERS ON MCCOVEY SAC FLY IN 14TH
Once again, the last place Hammers defeated the top ranked Clippers, this time in a marathon fourteen inning battle. The Hammers won, 2-1 in walkoff fashion when Willie McCovey’s deep fly ball scored Frank Robinson from third in the 14th stanza. Stan Musial and Hank Aaron each belted homeruns. WP-Billy O’Dell(3-6). LP-Hal Newhouser(4-3). HR-Stan Musial(19); Hank Aaron(21).
Terrifics 6 Sultans 2 TERRIFICS WIN ON FOSTER’S WALKOFF GRAND SLAM
What started as a pitcher’s duel between Lefty Williams and Mickey Lolich, ended in thrilling fashion, with the Terrifics pulling out a 4-2 walkoff victory. The game was knotted at two, but the Terrifics loaded the bases in the ninth, on two singles and a walk. Then George Foster iced it with his 21st homerun and second grand slam of the season. Lolich managed to nab the win, toiling a full nine innings, but it was a no decision for hard luck hurler, Williams, who continues to suffer from a lack of run support. Williams pitched eight innings, allowing just two runs on three hits. He did walk four batters, but none of those would score. WP-Mickey Lolich(6-4). LP-Wilbur Cooper(2-4). HR-Ray Chapman(8); Mike Schmidt(22), George Foster gs(21).
