Ed Walsh pitched his second shutout of the year, blanking the Hammers, 7-0. Big Ed scattered six hits and fanned eight. Ty Cobb returned to the Peaches lineup after a stint on the D.L. He slugged his fourth homerun in the top of the third inning. Walsh also chipped in at the plate, with two singles. Eddie Collins added three singles to the winning cause. WP-Ed Walsh(6-6). Clippers 6 Comets 4 10 inn CLIPPERS’ OTT HITS WALKOFF HR IN 10TH, BANKS HOMERS TO EXTEND HIT STREAK
Clippers’ B squader, Mel Ott, won it for his team with a two run, walkoff homerun off Bob Turley, in the bottom of the tenth inning. It was master Melvin’s fifth on the year. That allowed the Clippers to maintain their five game lead over the Mad Dogs, who also won today. The first place Clippers got plenty of power from Jimmie Foxx, who smashed a pair of homers, tying him with Babe Ruth of the Sultans, for the league lead. Lou Gehrig also went deep. The Comets’ Ernie Banks homered in the first for his only hit of the game. That extends his record hit streak to 24 games. WP-Red Ruffing(9-3). LP-Bob Turley(1-5). Naturals 4 Terrifics 3 NATURALS EDGE TERRIFICS, 4-3
The Naturals took a 4-2 lead into the ninth, then things got tense as a solo homer by Johnny Bench pulled the Terrifics within a run. However, Mark Melancon was able to prevent any further scoring and the Nats held on for the win. WP-Javy Lopez(2-3). LP-Steve Blass(5-5). HR-George Foster(22), Johnny Bench(17); Joey Votto(8).
Mad Dogs 11 Sultans 8 CHIPPER JONES JOINS 3 HR IN A GAME CLUB
Chipper Jones of the Mad Dogs, joins Jimmie Foxx, Mark McGwire and Miguel Cabrera as the only players who have hit three homeruns in a single game in the Legends League. No one has hit four. Jones hit a three run blast off Carl Mays’, in the third inning; a solo shot off Burleigh Grimes, in the fourth and a two run clout off Urban Shocker, in the seventh. The Mad Dogs led 11-4, before the Sultans got to Al Leiter for four runs in the top of the eighth inning. The victory ended a three game losing skid for the Mad Dogs, who are trying to catch the Clippers. WP-Kevin Brown(6-2). LP-Urban Shocker(2-7). HR-Chipper Jones 3(21), Ivan Rodriguez(5).
