B TEAM WIN ALL STAR GAME IN 9-7 COMEBACK THRILLER

A 0 0 0 1 6 0 0 0 0 7 6 0

B 1 2 0 0 1 0 5 0 X 9 14 1

The B team All Stars defeated a supposedly more talented A team, by keeping the A squad’s potent bats quiet, for the most part and by exploding for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The B’s got to A’s starter, Carl Hubbell right out of the gate, scoring a run in the first and two more in the second. Willie Mays got the A’s on the board, with an rbi double in the top of the fourth inning.

The visitors woke from their slumber in the top of the fifth. To begin with, Red Faber, now on the mound for the B’s, booted a ball off the bat of Chipper Jones. With Jones aboard, Babe Ruth smashed a long homerun. Things got no better for Faber, who issued back to back walks to Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams. The B’s called on Billy O’Dell, who gave up an rbi single to Lou Gehrig. That brought Ivan Rodriguez to the plate and he responded with a three run clout, putting the A’s in front, 7-3.

The B’s answered right back in the bottom of the fifth. Derek Jeter’s solo homerun off Dazzy Vance made it, 7-4. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, Walter Johnson pitching a scoreless top of the seventh for the B’s, then came the wild, bottom of the seventh.

With Bob Veale now on the hill for the A’s, the B’s new second sacker, George Kelly laced a single into center field. The B’s decided to gamble and have pitcher John Candeleria bat for himself. The Candy Man came through with a second single. Jeter also singled, spelling the end of the day for Veale. Jeter’s hit plated Kelly and Candeleria, cutting the score to 7-6. The A’s brought in Christy Mathewson, who, gave up the fourth single of the inning, to Roy Sievers. With two runners on, Matty got Ed Roush to pop out, but Ralph Kiner, who had taken over for Albert Belle in left, clubbed a three run bomb, putting the B’s in front for the first time, 9-7.

Johnson put up another zero in the top of the eighth, then Goose Gossage iced it by setting the A’s down in order in the top of the ninth.

The B’s outhit the A’s, 14-6 and with the exception of Ruth and Rodriguez’s homeruns; kept their bats quiet most of the day. Incredibly, the B’s pitchers issued eight walks, only two of those would score.
