TWINBILL TALES JULY 22

CLIPPERS TURN BACK TERRIFICS’ TWICE. BOTH ARE 1 RUN GAMES

Clippers 3 Terrifics 2; Clippers 7 Terrifics 6.

The Clippers took both ends of their doubleheader with the Terrifics, winning the A game, 3-2 and the B game, 7-6.

In the opener, Jimmie Foxx and Lou Gehrig belted back to back homeruns in the top of the fifth off Steve Carlton. That gave the Clippers a 3-2 advantage, which held up the rest of the way. Foxx’s clout was his 32sd of the year, tying him with Babe Ruth of the Sultans for the league lead. Ruth, however, has not hit a homerun since July 15th. WP-Mel Parnell(7-8). LP-Steve Carlton(8-8). HR-Jimmie Foxx(32), Lou Gehrig(23).

Sparky Lyle blew a save opportunity, giving up three runs in the top of the ninth, as the Clippers completed the sweep with a 7-6 comeback win in the B game. In the fateful ninth, Lyle allowed a double to Charlie Gehringer, then surrendered a homer to Bill Dickey, tying the game. Ralph Kiner then doubled, moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored the go ahead run on a Bob Elliott double. The Terrifics were forced to stay with Lyle, as they had just one pitcher eligible in the pen, that being Fergie Jenkins. The Terrifics outhit the Clippers, 17-13, but left 14 men on base. Cesar Cedeno was a double shy of the cycle for the Terrifics. WP-Bob Feller(7-1). LP-Sparky Lyle(4-3). HR-Stan Musial(26), Bill Dickey(4); Cesar Cedeno(2), Carlton Fisk(3).
