Rod Carew laced a game winning triple, scoring Johnny Bench with the winning run, as the Terrifics beat the Comets, 3-4, in eleven innings.
Seven runs were plated by the two teams in the first inning, four by the Comets against Mickey Lolich and three by the Comets off Warren Spahn. The Comets got a run in the sixth to tie the game, but neither team could push across a run until Carew’s three bagger. WP-Goose Gossage(3-4). LP-Herb Score(0-3). CHAPMAN HITS 10TH INNING, GAME WINNING HR FOR SULTANS

Ray Chapman, a man not known for his power, belted a two run, game winning homerun in the bottom of the tenth, to give the Sultans a 10-8 win in a see saw battle with the first place Clippers.
The Sultans, who have won three straight, trailed, 5-2, heading into the home seventh, but scored 8 runs over the next four innings to pull out the upset win. Joe Jackson and Tris Speaker each had three hits, Speaker also doubled twice. For the losing team, Ted Williams had three hits, including a homerun. Jimmie Foxx also blasted his 33rd homer, tying with the Bambino for the league lead. WP-Wilbur Cooper(3-5). LP-Red Ruffing9-4). HR-Ted Williams(29), Jimmie Foxx(33); Ray Chapman(10).
GREG MADDUX WHITEWASHES PEACHES WITH 3 HIT SHUTOUT

Greg Maddux helped the Mad Dogs close to within four games of the Clippers by pitching his best game of the year. Maddux tossed a three hit shutout, with nine punchouts, in the 5-0 victory. Jon Lester led 2-0, as he left the game after pitching six and a third innings. His bullpen let him down big time. Entering the game with two runners on, Mark Melancon surrendered a three run blast to Hank Aaron. He was pulled for Aldrois Chapman, who gave up a homer to Frank Robinson, a single to Willie Mays and the third homerun of the inning to Willie McCovey. Stretch has hit three in two games.
