#1 Clippers 5 Mad Dogs 1
The Clippers broke a 1-1 tie between Greg Maddux and Carl Hubbell, by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Three of those runs were charged to Maddux, the fourth to Trevor Hoffman. Carl Hubbell was brilliant, pitching a complete game, two hitter, in the 5-1, Clippers win. A solo homerun by Mark McGwire, in the seventh, spoiled the shutout bid. WP-Carl Hubbell(13-2). LP-Greg Maddux(9-8). HR-Mark McGwire(32); Ted Williams(32), Jimmie Foxx(36).
#2 Clippers 2 Mad Dogs 0
In the “B” game, Lefty Gomez tossed seven innings of scoreless ball, then Howie Pollet and Red Ruffing pitched an inning each, to combine on the 2-0, shutout victory. Pollet added some drama in the top of the eighth. After getting the first out, he walked two and hit a batter, before Albert Belle grounded into and inning ending, double play. WP-Lefty Gomez(4-6). LP-Al Leiter(2-6).
#1 Peaches 5 Terrifics 4
Game one saw Honus Wagner score pinch hitter Harry Hooper, in the last of the ninth on a game winning, sacrifice fly, as the Peaches nipped the Terrifics, 5-4. WP-Three Finger Brown(4-5). LP-Jim Palmer(3-3). HR-George Foster(29); Wildfire Schulte(18).
#2 Peaches 4 Terrifics 3
The Terrifics closed to within a run in the top of the ninth, but would get no closer, falling, 4-3, to the Peaches. It was their fifth loss in a row, while the Peaches have won four straight. WP-Pete Alexander(3-4). LP-Fergie Jenkins(5-4). HR-Heinie Zimmerman(2), Birdie Cree(2).
Sultans 7 Hammers 6
In the only game on the slate which was not part of a doubleheader, the Sultans held on for a 7-6 win over the Hammers. The Sultans led, 7-3, heading into the bottom of the ninth. The scrappy Hammers plated three runs before Elston Howard, who had homered the inning earlier, lined out to short stop to end the game. Lefty Williams won for just the second time this year. WP-L. Williams(2-11). LP-Jim Maloney(7-6). HR-George Sisler(11), Rogers Hornsby(15); Frank Robinson(16), Elston Howard(7).
#1 Naturals 6 Comets 5
In yet another, one run game, the Naturals had a 6-1 cushion after seven innngs. They held their collective breath, while the Comets tallied four in the bottom of the eighth, but ultimately, would come up a run short. Koji Uehara saved it for Jon Lester, in the bottom of the ninth. WP-Jon Lester(5-11). LP-Bob Turley(1-6). HR-Joey Votto(14), Yasiel Puig(10).
#2 Comets 6 Naturals 3
Roy Sievers ended a fourteen inning marathon, by belting a three run, walkoff homer against Aroldis Chapman. With their bullpen exhausted, the Naturals asked Chapman to go four innings, pitching in fatigue protocol, the entire time. It was Siever’s fifth HR, tying him for the B team lead with Yogi Berra.
