CLIPPERS CHASE DRYSDALE EARLY IN 8-6 WIN OVER HAMMERS

The Clippers got to the the Hammers’ Don Drysdale early, scoring a run in the first and five more in the second, as the Clippers increased their lead on the Mad Dogs, by defeating the Hammers’, 8-6. Frank Robinson(22) homered for the losers. WP-Schoolboy Rowe(12-6). LP-Don Drysdale(4-14).

CARLTON TIES STRIKEOUT MARK, YET TERRIFICS STILL DROP FIFTH STRAIGHT

Steve Carlton fanned 16 Sultans over 8.2 innings, tying the mark set earlier this year for punchouts in a single game, yet the Terrifics still managed to lose, 5-3. It was their fifth straight defeat. Babe Ruth(44) homered again and is now tied with Ken Griffey, Jr., for the league lead. George Foster(33) put one out for the Terrifics. WP-Urban Shocker(3-8). LP-Steve Carlton(10-9).

ROBERTS SPINS 4 HIT GEM, TO EARN FIRST SHUTOUT FOR COMETS

Robin Roberts, of the Comets, shutout the Peaches, 1-0, on a four hitter. It was his first whitewash of the season. The game was unusual, in that, Roberts only had one strikeout, but also allowed just one base on balls. The game’s lone run came in the first inning, when Ernie Banks singled in Gil Hodges. CABRERA WALK OFF SINGLE IN 11TH, GIVES NATS SEVENTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

Miguel Cabrera’s single off Kevin Brown in the bottom of the eleventh inning, allowed the Naturals to post a 6-5 win over the second place Mad Dogs. Cabrera had a five rbi day, including his(37th) homerun. Troy Tulowitski(14) and Robinson Cano(16) also hit homeruns for the Nats. The Mad Dogs’ Ken Griffey Jr.,(44) belted a solo shot in the first, keeping pace with Babe Ruth for the homerun crown. WP-Chapman(4-3). LP-Brown(9-5).
