HAMMERS, CLIPPERS SPLIT. 7-4 AND 4-9
The Hammers continue to be a tough out for the first place Clippers. They won the A game, 7-4, with help from a two run blast by Willie Mays(36). Stan Musial(33) went deep for the Clippers. WP-Koufax(7-14). LP-Ruffing(10-6)
Charlie Gehringer’s(3) grand slam was the difference in the B game, as the Clippers pulled out a 9-4 win. Lou Gehrig(36) also homered and was 4-5 at the plate. Del Crandall(3) had a homerun and three hits for the losing team. WP-Newhouser(7-3). LP-Maloney(7-7).
PEACHES/COMETS ALSO SPLIT THEIR TWINBILL
The Peaches beat the Comets in a laugher in game one, with an 11-4 stomping. The team batted around in the top of the eighth, plating seven runs. Wildfire Shulte(20) clubbed a pair of homers and Sherry Magee(20) added one. WP-Mathewson(11-5). LP-Turley(1-8).
The Comets battled back in the B game, winning, 6-4, thanks to a two run triple by Pee Wee Reese, in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ted Kluszewski(6) smacked a homer for the Comets. Harry Hooper led the offense for the Peaches, with a double and two singles and three runs scored. WP-Lew Burdette(2-4). LP-Johnson(9-8).
SULTANS HAND TERRIFICS THEIR SIXTH STRAIGHT LOSS
Rogers Hornsby(20), Joe Jackson(18) and George Sisler(15) all homered, as the Sultans blew past the Terrifics, 7-2. It was the sixth loss in a row for the Terrifics. WP-L.Williams(3-13). LP-Lolich(7-8).
CHIPPER JONES’ 11TH INN HR ENDS NATURALS 7 GAME WIN STREAK
Chipper Jones(29) hit a solo homerun in the top of the eleventh inning, to lead the Mad Dogs past the Terrifics, 3-2. That loss ends a seven game winning streak for the Nats. WP-Rivera(5-3). LP-Uehara(4-3).
