The Clippers split a doubleheader with the Peaches, losing the A game, 4-3, on a Mickey Cochrane passed ball in the bottom of the eleventh inning, but coming back to capture the B contest, 7-6.
In the opener, pinch hitter, Nap Lajoie, who reached third base after a Ty Cobb two bagger, raced home with the winning run, when Cochrane let a Howie Pollet pitch get past him. Honus Wagner(13) homered for the Peaches. WP-Bender(7-5). LP-Pollet(0-3)
Mel Ott(7) paced the B teamers for the Clippers, with a single, double and home run, as the Clippers bounced back to win, 7-6 and earn the split. WP-Feller(9-2). LP-Gregg(5-6).
COMETS EDGE HAMMERS, 2-1
Carl Furillo doubled twice and drove in both Comets’ runs, in a 2-1 victory over the Hammers. Willie Mays(37) hit a solo homerun, which was the Hammers lone run in the game. WP-Turley(2-8). LP-Marichal(9-7).
BRYCE HARPER PACES NATURALS IN 3-2 WIN OVER SULTANS
The Naturals left fielder was 3-4, with a single, double and home run(12), leading the Naturals past the Sultans, 3-2. Winning pitcher, Justin Verlander limited the Sultans to just three hits over seven innings. WP-Verlander(10-8). LP-C. Mays(8-11).
BONDS SENDS SLUMPING TERRIFICS TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT DEFEAT
The Mad Dogs’ Barry Bonds led the offense with a single, double and homerun(17), as the Mad Dogs cut the Clippers lead to just a half game by sending the Terrifics to their seventh loss in a row, with a 5-3 victory. The Terrifics got a homer from Mike Schmidt(30) and even one from starting pitcher, Tom Seaver(1), but it was not enough. WP-Wells(14-5). LP-Seaver(9-14).
