HEADLINES:
HAMMERS CONTINUE TO PLAY SPOILER AS THEY BEAT CLIPPERS, 7-3
The last place Hammers handed the Clippers their third straight loss, by a 7-3 margin. The Mad Dogs were idle, so the loss increases their lead over the Clippers to one game, with 10 days left in the season. Juan Marichal(10-7) got the best of Carl Hubbell(14-3), the latter suffering his first loss since July 11.(Hubbell had several no decisions in that span.) Hank Aaron(39), Frank Robinson(23) and Elston Howard(8) all belted two run homers. Bill Mazeroski(7) had a solo shot. Stan Musial(35) went deep for the Clippers.
TERRIFICS STUN PEACHES WITH FIVE RUN, 9TH INNING
The Peaches headed into the top of the ninth, leading the Terrifics, 8-6, with Wilbur Cooper, on the hill. After getting the first two batters, he quickly melted down, allowing two singles, two walks and then a grand slam to Johnny Bench(23). Reggie Jackson(34) homered for the third straight game and Mike Schmidt(32) added one as well. This game featured six triples, four by the Peaches. Sparky Lyle(5-4) got the win in relief, Cooper, of course, took the loss.(3-6).
BOB LEMON SPINS MASTERFUL, TWO HIT SHUTOUT, IN COMETS’ 5-0 VICTORY
The Comets’ Bob Lemon was absolutely brilliant, pitching a two hit shutout, his first whitewash of the season, in a 5-0, victory over the Peaches. Lemon struck out three and did not walk a batter, in the gem. Carl Furillo(4), led the offense, with a single, double and home run. Roy Campanella(16) had a solo blast. Eddie Plank(5-7) took the loss.
The Mad Dogs and Naturals did not play.
