GAME RECAPS:

Clippers 13 Hammers 4.

The Clippers demolished the Hammers, 13-4, getting a pair of homeruns from Lou Gehrig(39), along with clouts from Joe DiMaggio(30), Stan Musial(36) and Mel Ott(8). Hammers’ starter, Dazzy Vance(4-14) was chased from the box after just an inning and a third. Willie Mays(39) was the bright spot for the Hammers. He went 3-5, with a homer. Willie McCovey(20) went deep as well. Herb Pennock(9-9) earned the win for the Clippers. The win, coupled with the Mad Dogs splitting with the Nats, puts the Clippers just a half-game behind.

Naturals 3 Mad Dogs 0. #1

Justin Verlander(11-8) tossed his third shutout of the season, blanking the Mad Dogs, 3-0, in the first of two games. Verlander gave up two singles, one to Alex Rodriguez and another to Ken Griffey, Jr. He logged 14 punchouts, while walking only one batter. Joey Votto(16) homered for the Nats. David Wells(14-6) was tagged with the loss.

Mad Dogs 5 Naturals 1 #2

The B team stepped up in game two, giving the Dogs a 5-1 win. Kevin Brown started for the Mad Dogs and went six innings. Pedro Martinez(8-5) collected the win in relief. Robin Ventura(2) homered, but Juan Gonzales(7) had the big blow, with a three run clout, in the bottom of the eighth inning. LP-Adam Wainwright(8-4).

Comets 8 Peaches 1

The Comets had an easy time agains the Peaches, winning, 8-1. They got two run blasts from Mickey Mantle(41) and Carl Furillo(5), as well as a three run, pinch hit grand slam from Yogi Berra(7). Yogi’s smash was part of a six run, top of the ninth. Hal Chase(8) parked one, for the Peaches only run. WP-Whitey Ford(11-8). LP-Ed Walsh(7-12).

Terrifics 13 Sultans 6

Sultans Park is known as a launching pad, and it lived up to that reputation, as the Terrifics clubbed five homeruns, with the Sultans adding one, in the Terrifics, 13-6 victory. Mike Schmidt(34) was the big bopper, scoring three times and driving in four runs. Joe Morgan(21), Johnny Bench(24) and George Foster(36) each added a home run. Ray Schalk(5) added one for the losing Sultans. WP-Bob Gibson(11-9). LP-Stan Coveleski(7-6).
