MAD DOGS ON CUSP OF PENNANT AFTER SWEEPING CLIPPERS IN TWINBILL

TERRIFICS MAKE IT FIVE WINS STRAIGHT IN BATTLE FOR FIRST DIVISON

GAME RECAPS:

The surging Mad Dogs, winners of four in a row, have built a 4.5 game lead over the second place Clippers, with just five days left in the regular season. They won twice yesterday, by scores of 3-1 and 6-1, in the B game. In the opener, David Wells(15-6) pitched his fourth complete game of the season, getting homers from Ken Griffey, Jr., who is now in the lead for the home run title and from Mark McGwire, who belted his forty fourth.

In the B game, the Mad Dogs’ Kevin Brown(10-5) tossed his best game of the year, beating the Clippers, 6-1. Brown went 8 innings plus, before getting his shutout bid spoiled by a Ted Williams(33), pinch hit home run. Albert Belle(8) and Mike Piazza(3) went deep for the Dogs.

In other action, the Terrifics moved a full game ahead of the Peaches, as those two teams battle to stay in the first division. The Terrifics downed the Hammers’, 4-1, behind a complete game effort from Tom Seaver(10-14), his third of the year. Reggie Jackson(36) and Johnny Bench(25) clubbed home runs.

Eddie Plank(5-8) and the Peaches dropped a 6-3 decision to the Sultans. A first inning homer by Honus Wagner(15) put the Peaches up, 3-0, but the Sultans bounced back, scoring two runs in their half of the first and three more, in the second, to move into the lead to stay. Herb Pennock(11-9) was the winning pitcher.

The days’ final game saw the Comets defeat the Naturals’, 5-3, with all the Comets runs coming via homerun. Ernie Banks(24), Roy Campanella(17), Gil Hodges(11) and Ken Boyer(14) each had circuit clouts. Bob Lemon(11-9) earned the win over Justin Verlander(11-9).
