RECAPS: The Peaches beat back the Sultans’, 14-5, in one of the most one sided games of the year. Lefty Williams(4-14) was tagged for six runs in the very first inning, capped off by back to back home runs by Honus Wagner(16) and Wildfire Schulte(24). Schulte belted a second home run in the fourth inning. The lone bright spot for the Sultans’ was Babe Ruth, who hit his 48th home run, tying him with Ken Griffey, Jr. for the league lead. Rube Waddell(8-13) earned the win. The win snapped a six game skid for the Peaches.
The Hammers burst out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, then their bats went cold and they didn’t score again until they got a run in the top of the ninth. That run proved crucial, as the Terrifics scored a run in the first, fourth, twice more in the eighth and in the ninth, again plated two runs, eventually falling a run short, in a 7-6 loss to the Hammers. In a weird quirk, Sam McDowell(5-3) notched the win in relief of Don Drysdale. This despite McDowell allowing four runs in just an inning and a third and allowing three home runs. He surrendered back to back solo shots to Reggie Jackson(37) and Mike Schmidt(36), then he coughed up a two run blast to Joe Morgan(23) in the top of the ninth. Still, the Hammers somehow managed to hold on for the win.
The Naturals got a walkoff, 3-2 win over the Comets, thanks to Troy Tulowitski’s game winning double in the bottom of the ninth inning. No home runs in this game. WP-Papelbon(3-4). LP-Burdette(2-6).
The Mad Dogs moved into a virtual lock for the pennant, beating the Clippers, 4-1. In yet another, first inning barrage, the Dogs posted a four spot against Dizzy Dean(11-10), then Roger Clemens(13-5) made that hold up. The Rocket went seven and a third, allowing just one run, a Ted Williams(34) solo bomb, on four hits, in that span. It was a bit of a Jeckyl and Hyde performance from Clemens, who struck out 14 batters in a little over seven innings, but also walked five and hit a batter. Alex Rodriguez(27) paced the offense for the Mad Dogs, going 3-4, with a three run home run.
