TERRIFICS OUTLAST CLIPPERS IN SLUGFEST
GAME SCORES:
Sultans 1 Comets 0
Dazzy Vance staked his claim for Pitcher of the Year honors, by spinning a five hit shutout, in his final start of the season. It was Vance’s ninth complete game and fifth shutout, both league highs, as well as his 18th win, which also leads the league. Joe Jackson hit his 20th homerun for the Sultans. WP-Vance(18-6). LP-Roberts(12-16).
Comets 3 Sultans 1
The Comets got their revenge in the B game, pulling out a 3-1 victory, with help from a Ted Kluszewski, two run clout. Big Klu paces the B teamers, with 8 circuit clouts. WP-Score(2-4). LP-Coveleski(7-7).
Naturals 1 Peaches 0 11 inn
Miguel Cabrera singled in Mike Trout in the bottom of the eleventh inning, to give the Naturals a 1-0 walkoff win over the Peaches. It was Trout’s 100th run scored on the year. Starter, Max Scherzer toiled for nine innings, while Koji Uehara and Aroldis Chapman worked an inning each. WP-Chapman(6-3). LP-Brown(5-8).
Peaches 3 Naturals 2 10 inn
Fred Clarke tripled in the top of the tenth, then came in on a Stuffy McInnis single, as the Peaches B club won, 3-2. After his game one heroics, Miguel Cabrera hung around to play third base in the second game. He belted his 42sd homer in the second inning. WP-Alexander(4-4). LP-Lopez(2-5).
Hammers 4 Mad Dogs 0
In the double header everyone was waiting for, Sandy Koufax of the last place Hammers’, stunned the Mad Dogs, with a five hit whitewash, in the opener. It was definitely Koufax at his best, as he fanned a dozen, while issuing just one free pass. The Hammers got to Greg Maddux for three runs in the top of the first and never looked back. WP-Koufax(8-15). LP-Maddux(13-9).
Mad Dogs 9 Hammers 4
The Mad Dogs’ B squad definitely stepped up, getting a solid seven innings from Al Leiter and clubbing three home runs, to defeat the Hammers, 9-4. Mike Piazza(4) and Raphael Palmerio(6) went deep for the B team. Chipper Jones pinch hit in the last of the eighth and smacked his 31st. Now it would just be a matter of waiting to see what the Clippers would do against the Terrifics. WP-Leiter(4-6). LP-Maloney(7-8).
Terrifics 10 Clippers 8
The Terrifics burst out to a 10-2 advantage, behind Mickey Lolich and a Rod Carew grand slam, but the Clippers, on the verge of elimination, battled back and scored six runs over the final two innings, ultimately falling two runs short, in a 10-8 loss. Lou Gehrig joined the elite, “three home runs in one game” club, with a solo shot in the second; a two run blast in the eighth and a three run homer, in the ninth. George Foster added a solo home run for the Terrifics. WP-Lolich(9-8). LP-Pollet(0-5).
So with two days left to go, the flag has been decided and the Mad Dogs are Legends League champions. The battle for the last spot in the first decision, between the Peaches and Terrifics, is still up for grabs. After that, it will be to see who finishes where as far as leading the league in the various individual categories.
