A CAPSULE LOOK AT THE LEGENDS LEAGUE SEASON
Well, the season has come to an end. In what was pretty much a two team race all year, the Mad Dogs pulled away at the end and managed to finish 6 games ahead of the Clippers for the title.
The Mad Dogs did it with pitching. Everyone on their starting rotation won 13 or more games and two of those pitchers had sub 3.00 ERA’s. Known for their power, the Dogs led all teams in homeruns with 218. It was a very balanced team.
On the other hand, the Clippers’ pitching staff let them down. The lowest ERA on the staff was Carl Hubbell at 4.19. They did have two MVP candidates in Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, who both had monster seasons. More on the MVP and Pitcher of the Year, later.
Babe Ruth of the Sultans ended up as home run champion with 49, one more than Ken Griffey, Jr. Ty Cobb rallied in his final game, to push his batting average to .401. Joe Jackson set a new house record for triples with 18.
These are the slash lines for the five MVP candidates: Jimmie Foxx: .325/.419/.666; Lou Gehrig: .319/.368/.659; Ty Cobb: .401/.435/.594; Rogers Hornsby: .352/.469/.651; Babe Ruth: .279/.414/.704
I went with Hornsby as MVP, as he had the most balance between average and power. Interesting that none of these players were on the Mad Dogs.
There could be no other choice for Pitcher of the Year, than Dazzy Vance. He led the league in Innings Pitched; Wins; Strikeouts; Least Hits Allowed; Complete Games; Shutouts; ERA; and WHIP.
He also pitched a no hitter and one hitter during the season.
