MAZ HAS BIG DAY AT TOP OF ORDER IN BUCS OPENING DAY WIN

Bill Mazeroski went 3-4, with three singles and scored three of the Pirates five runs, as they beat the Phillies on Opening Day, by a score of, 5-2.

Dock Ellis went seven innings to notch the win. Mudcat Grant pitched the eighth, then Dave Guisti pitched a one, two, three inning, in the ninth, to notch the save.

Maz wasn’t the only Pirate to have a good day at the dish. Manny Sanguillen had a double and a triple and drove in a run. Bob Robertson had a single and a double and knocked in a pair of runs. Willie Stargell led off the bottom of the sixth, with his first home run of the season.

The Buccos overcame two errors in the field. In the bottom of the third, Denny Doyle laced a ball into the left field gap, which Al Oliver got to as it reached the base of the wall. Oliver then picked it up, dropped it, then threw wildly in the direction of third base. The hustling Doyle circled the bases and the play was scored as a double and a two base error. Then in the top of the eighth, Richie Hebner clanked an easy chance at third, but fortunately, no runs were scored.

Willie Montanez went two for four and drove in a run for Philadelphia.
