GM#2 VS PHILADELPHIA APRIL 8, 1971
NO LIS THAN 3 DOUBLES, HELPS PHILS DOWN BUCS, 4-1
Philadelphia left fielder, Joe Lis, banged out three doubles, scored twice and drove in one run, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-1.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, when Willie Stargell doubled, then was later driven in by Jackie Hernandez. That 1-0 Pittsburgh lead would hold up until Lis’ first two bagger, in the top of the fifth. He moved to third on a Tim McCarver groundball, then scored, beating Bill Mazeroski’s late throw to the plate on Mike Anderson’s grounder to second.
The Phillies would add a run in the seventh and two more in the ninth, the final two runs being unearned, due to a Hernandez error. WP-Woodie Fryman. LP-Luke Walker(0-1).
Now 1-1, the Buccos travel to Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium, to take on the Braves in a three game series.
