1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 5 APRIL 11, 1971 AT ATLANTA BRAVES

AARON’S WALKOFF HR IN TENTH, HIS SECOND OF THE GAME, WINS IT FOR ATLANTA

Henry Aaron was sure a thorn in the Pirates side this series. He had three homeruns, a triple and a single and drove in seven runs, in the three game set.

Hammerin’ Hank won the game and the series for the Braves with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the tenth inning, off reliever, Dave Giusti(0-1). It was his second homer of the game, as he hit a two run shot off starter, Dock Ellis, in the bottom of the first.

Dock Ellis took a 6-3 lead into the sixth, but allowed back to back singles to Marty Perez and pinch hitter, Darrell Evans. Sonny Jackson then lofted a ball to centerfield, which Al Oliver clanked into a two base error. Al is much more comfortable and better at first base, but the Buccos want to get Bob Robertson’s bat into the lineup and that’s the only place Robbie fits on the field. After the miscue in the field, Ralph Garr then stroked a two run single, tying the game. It remained knotted until Aaron’s clout ended things in the tenth inning. Willie Stargell(2) and Al Oliver(1) each homered for Pittsburgh. WP-Priddy. LP-Giusti(0-1).
