STARGELL’S 11TH INNING HOMER ENDS CLASSIC PITCHER’S DUEL

Dock Ellis and Tom Seaver hooked up in one of the best pitcher’s duels seen in some time. Seaver went a full ten innings, allowing no runs, on just two hits and fanning 10, before being pulled for a pinch hitter, in the bottom of the tenth. The move didn’t pay off, as reliever, Tug McGraw surrendered a home run to Willie Stargell(5), in the top of the eleventh.

While not as statistically good as Seaver, Pittsburgh’s Dock Ellis pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking two.

The Mets blew a great chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Mudcat Grant had relieved Ellis and after retiring Bud Harrelson for the first out, Grant walked Cleon Jones. Richie Hebner then booted a ball off the bat of Donn Clendenon. A second walk to Ken Singleton ended Grant’s time on the mound. Bob Veale took over on the mound and the Mets opportunity was squashed when Ken Boswell hit a one hopper to Hebner, who redeemed himself for his error, with a 5-4-3 twin killing.

WP-Bob Veale(2-0). LP-Tug McGraw
