PIRATES SPLIT WITH METS IN FIRST DOUBLE HEADER OF THE YEAR

The Pittsburgh Pirates split a doubleheader with the New York Mets, winning the opener, 5-3, behind Luke Walker(2-1), but dropping the second game, 5-4, when Cleon Jones belted a three run homer, to bring the Mets from behind.

In game one, Al Oliver doubled twice, knocking in two runs and Richie Hebner(1) went deep for the first time this season. Bob Miller pitched four innings of shutout relief and earned a save.

Bob Johnson got the start in game two and went six innings, exiting with a 4-2 lead. Bob Veale was called on to try and retire lefty, Ed Kranepool, in the bottom of the seventh and was able to do so. Jim Nelson came in and got the last two outs in the seventh, but faltered in the eighth. After retiring pinch-hitter, Donn Clendenon, he allowed back to back singles to Bud Harrelson and Ken Boswell. Tommie Agee flew out to center field, however, Cleon Jones clubbed a three run home run, putting the Mets on top, 5-3.

Lee May(1) homered in this game, his first behind the plate for the Buccos. Jim Nelson(0-1) was tagged with the loss.
