GIANTS EDGE PIRATES, 2-1, IN SERIES OPENER
The Pirates lost to the Giants by a score of 2-1, in game one of a three-game series. Luke Walker, though he went only five innings, worked out of jam after jam, stranding nine runners, three of them on third base, without allowing a run. Al Oliver’s(3) second inning home run gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Jim Nelson(0-2) came in to relieve after Jose Pagan pinch hit for Walker in the bottom of the fifth. He pitched a 1,2,3 sixth inning, but in the top of the seventh, San Francisco loaded the bases with one out. Willie Mc Covey hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game. Dick Dietz then doubled, scoring Chris Speier and making it 2-1, Giants, where it would remain until the game ended.
