GM# 17 APRIL 24, 1971 VS SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
PIRATES LOSE ANOTHER ONE RUN GAME TO GIANTS
Having lost 2-1 in the opening game of the series, the Pirates again lost a one run heartbreaker to the Giants, this time by a score of, 3-2.
Each club scored a single run in both the third and seventh innings. Bob Johnson started and toiled seven frames for the Bucs. Mudcat Grant(0-1) relieved and survived a shaky eighth inning, allowing three hits, but no runs, thanks to a 6-4-3 double play. The Pirates sent Grant back out for the top of the ninth and it proved to be a mistake. Grant issued back to back walks to Dave Kingman and Al Gallagher, then pitcher Jim Barr sacrificed both runners to second and third, respectively. Chris Spier then singled in the go ahead run. A Tito Fuentes twin killing ended the rally, but Giants closer, Steve Hamilton stopped the Bucs in the bottom of the ninth.
Barr was the winning pitcher. Fran Healy had a pinch hit home run for San Francisco, in the top of the seventh.
The series concludes tomorrow, with Nelson Briles facing Juan Marichal.
