1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 19 APRIL 27, 1971 VS LOS ANGELES DODGERS

DOCK ELLIS TOSSES 4 HIT SHUTOUT AGAINST DODGERS

Dock Ellis(2-0) breezed to victory today, pitching a four hit shutout against Los Angeles. No Dodger base runner made it past second base. Ellis struck out three batters and did not allow a single base on balls.

The Pirates got Dock a run in the bottom of the first, when Dave Cash and Gene Clines led off the game with singles against Claude Osteen. The red hot, Roberto Clemente followed with a third single, but Cash was thrown out at the plate, trying to score. After Willie Stargell popped out to third, Bob Robertson walked, loading the bases. Manny Sanguillen then hit a ball which ticked off Bill Russell’s glove, scoring Clines, before Jose Pagan grounded out to end the inning.

As it turned out, that run would have been enough for Ellis, but to make him feel at ease, Bob Robertson(5) smashed a three run homer, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Steve Blass will square off against Don Sutton tomorrow.
