GM# 21 APRIL 29, 1971 VS LOS ANGELES DODGERS
BUCS STAVE OFF LATE RALLY WIN 6-4 TO COMPLETE SWEEP OF L.A.
Luke Walker(3-1) pitched eight and a third innings off scoreless ball, but the Dodgers threatened with one out in the ninth. Steve Garvey reached on a Rich Hebner error, then Jim Lefebvre doubled, putting runners on second and third. Pittsburgh decided to go with Dave Giusti, but the Bucs reliever hadn’t worked in awhile and the rust showed.
Giusti allowed a double and two singles and a 6-0 Pirate lead quickly became a 6-4 game. Bob Veale came in to put out the fire and earn his first save.
The win puts Pittsburgh at the top of the N.L. East, with a 14-7 record. Their homestand will continue as the San Diego Padres come to town next.
