APRIL RECAP
Pittsburgh has shot to the top of the National League East standings, with a 15-7 record, as April comes to an end.
On the pitching front, Dock Ellis(3-0 2.48); Steve Blass(3-0 2.48); Luke Walker(3-1 2.09) are leading the way. Though Nelson Briles has had only one start, he has allowed just one run in 22 innings pitched. Dave Giusti has five saves.
The Pirates offense is led by their All Star right fielder, Roberto Clemente. The Great One is batting .363, with 13 runs scored and 11 driven in. He has six doubles, two triples and two home runs.
Pittsburgh has been criticized for putting Al Oliver in center field, instead of first base. It is true that Oliver is struggling. He is currently 15-81, for a .188 batting average. But the team has confidence that Al will heat up.
More importantly, it was neccessary to get Bob Robertson’s big bat into the lineup and first base is his only position. Case in point, Robby is batting .329, with 13 runs scored and 17 runs batted in. He is tied for the team home run lead with Willie Stargell, with seven.
