1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 23 MAY 1, 1971 VS SAN DIEGO PADRES

PIRATES COME FROM BEHIND IN 5-3 WIN OVER PADRES

The Buccos have won six straight, this time doing it in come from behind fashion. They trailed Clay Kirby and the Padres 3-1, when Kirby ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Kirby retired Bob Robertson and Manny Sanguillen for the first two outs. Gene Alley singled, then Bill Mazeroski pinch hit for starter, Bob Moose, and drilled a triple into the corner. Dave Cash drew a walk, then Richie Hebner(2) drilled a three run home run. With two outs and Kirby’s turn in the batting order fast approaching, San Diego hoped he could get the third out. He could not. Vic Davalillo singled and Willie Stargell walked, before the Padres pulled the plug. Dick Kelley got Al Oliver to ground out to third for the final out of the inning. Bob Moose(2-2) collected the win and Oliver(4) hit a first inning homer.
