GM# 25 MAY 4, 1971 AT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
BUCCOS SURVIVE HIGH DRAMA TO NOTCH 8TH STRAIGHT WIN
Steve Blass(4-0) grinded through eight and two thirds innings of shutout ball, clinging to a narrow, 1-0 lead. Though Blass had seven strikeouts, he allowed eight hits along the way as time after time, the Giants would get a runner in scoring position, but the rally would fizzle out.
Blass opened the bottom of the ninth with two straight punchouts. He fanned Dick Dietz and Dave Kingman back to back, but Tito Fuentes singled, as did Alan Gallagher, sending Fuentes to third base.
With Blass on fumes and the tying and winning runs on base, Dave Giusti came in from the bullpen. Pirates fans would have to bite their nails a little longer, as Giusti walked pinch hitter, Hal Lanier, to load the bases.
However, with the game on the line, Giusti reared back and struck out San Francisco’s best player, Bobby Bonds, to end the game and give the streaking Pirates their eighth straight victory. Giusti notched his (6th) save.
Luke Walker will battle Juan Marichal in tomorrow’s final game of a short, two game set.
