GM# 28 MAY 8, 1971 AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS
NELSON BRILES EARNS WIN ON MOUND AND HOMERS FOR PIRATES
Pittsburgh’s Nelson Briles(3-0) went eight and a third innings, to collect his third straight decision and also belted a seventh inning, two run home run, as the Pirates beat the Dodgers, 5-3.
Roberto Clemente’s(3) two run clout, off Al Downing, in the first inning, got the party started. Willie Stargell(8) would add a solo shot in the top of the sixth. Then Briles capped it off with his homer, with Manny Sanguillen aboard in the seventh.
It looked as if Briles was on his way to a shutout, however, he stumbled in the bottom of the ninth. He fanned Bill Grabarkewitz, to begin the inning, but three singles and a fielder’s choice later, Briles’ day was done and Dave Giusti came in. Dick Allen reached on a Mazeroski error, then a Wes Parker single brought in the third run of the inning. Finally, Giusti got Jim Leferbvre to ground out to second, ending the ball game. That’s save #7 for Dave Giusti. Downing took the loss.
In tomorrow’s finale, Steve Blass takes on Sandy Vance.
