JACKIE HERNANDEZ BAILS OUT BRILES WITH CLUTCH 2 RUN HOMER
Pittsburgh headed into the bottom of the seventh with a 4-2 lead. Nellie Briles had relieved Dock Ellis and had gotten the first two outs. But then, Enzo Hernandez singled and Dave Campbell homered to tie the game at four apiece.
Briles was given a chance to get the final out of the inning, but when he allowed a single to Cito Gaston, Bob Miller took over. Miller got Nate Colbert to ground out to first to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Padres reliever, Dick Kelley issued a leadoff single to Jose Pagan. He bounced back to retire Al Oliver and Bill Mazeroski, but Jackie Hernandez stepped up and clubbed a clutch, two run blast, putting Pittsburgh ahead, six to four. The Pirates added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, to come away with a 7-4 victory over San Diego. WP-Bob Miller(2-0). LP-Dick Kelley HR-J. Hernandez(2)
Luke Walker battles Dave Roberts in the final game tomorrow.
