1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 35 MAY 17, 1971 VS MONTREAL EXPOS

ALLEY MAKES UP FOR ERROR WITH A 3 RUN HOME RUN

Pittsburgh shortstop, Gene Alley committed an error in the top of the fourth inning, which, although it didn’t lead to a run, had some Pirate fans grumbling.

He more than atoned for it when his turn to bat came up in the Pirates half of the fourth, by smashing a three run homer off Carl Morton, with Rich Hebner and Bob Robertson aboard.

The Expos inched closer, getting a run in the seventh, then John Bateman hit a solo shot in the eighth, off Mudcat Grant, who relieved starter, Luke Walker. However, Dave Giusti was able to nail down the ninth, for the save, despite hitting Ron Hunt, who was hit by pitches, twice in the game. WP-Luke Walker(5-2). LP-Carl Morton. SV-Giusti(8). HR-Gene Alley(3); John Bateman.

Montreal’s Bill Stoneman battles Bob Johnson in tomorrow’s game.
