1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 36 MAY 18, 1971 VS MONTREAL EXPOS

RUSTY STAUB HOMERS TWICE TO LEAD EXPOS PAST PIRATES

Le Grande Orange; Rusty Staub, belted a pair of home runs to lead the Montreal Expos past the Pittsburgh Pirates, by a score of, 6-3.

Staub hit a two run clout off starter, Bob Johnson, in the first inning, then led off a four run, eight inning with a solo home run off Mudcat Grant, who lost the game in relief.

It was a tough outing for Grant, who took over after Nelson Briles had pitched two scoreless innings, with the Pirates hanging on to a 3-2 lead. Staub’s second homer immediately tied the game, then Grant walked the next two batters, before being yanked for Bob Veale. Unfortunately, both those free passes would come around to score.

The Buccos continue to be without Willie Stargell, who is battling tendonitis in his hand. WP-John Strohmeyer. LP-Mudcat Grant(0-2).

The Pirates will next fly to Cincinnati to battle the Reds. Bob Moose takes on Gary Nolan in the opener.
