1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 38 MAY 20, 1971 AT CINCINNATI REDS

GIUSTI BLOWS SAVE CHANCE BUCS LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT GAME

The Pirates dropped a 5-4 decision against the Reds and have now lost three games in a row.

Bob Robertson got Pittsburgh off to a good start, belting a three run home run in the first inning. They added a run in the top of the second, to take a four run lead. Cincinnati answered quickly, tattooing Steve Blass, who gave up a walk, double and three singles, accounting for three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Pittsburgh clung to that one run lead, with Blass going five innings and Mudcat Grant, two more. Dave Giusti took the mound in the bottom of the eighth and retired Johnny Bench for the first out. Things went quickly south, from there. Tony Perez doubled, Lee May drove him in with a single, then Bernie Carbo clubbed another double, scoring May all the way from first. Giusti got the hook and Jim Nelson came in to get the last two outs.

Clay Carroll took care of business in the top of the ninth, setting Pittsburgh down in order. WP-Wayne Granger. LP-Dave Giusti(0-2). HR-Bob Robertson(10).

The Pirates now head to Jarry Park in Montreal, to play the Expos.
