1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 44 MAY 27, 1971 VS CINCINNATI REDS

BUCS WIN, 8-1, BUT CLEMENTE ERROR COSTS ELLIS A SHUTOUT

The game was never in doubt, as Pittsburgh took the final game of the series against Cincinnati, by a score of 8-1. The Reds only run came in the top of the eighth inning, when Bernie Carbo lofted a high fly ball to Roberto Clemente in right field. Clemente, one of the best outfielders in baseball, camped under it, basket style, ala Willie Mays and the ball popped out. Carbo wound up standing on second base and was later brought home by a Buddy Bradford single.

That of course, ended any chance of a shutout for Dock Ellis, but he still spun a nifty, complete game, three hitter. The Pirate ace fanned seven in what, so far, has been a perfect season for him. Like Steve Blass in the previous game, Ellis was no slouch with the stick, going 2-4, with two singles.

Dave Cash, Manny Sanguillen, Jose Pagan and Bob Robertson all had two hits apiece. The latter smacked his fourteenth home run, putting him one up on teammate Willie Stargell. WP-Dock Ellis(6-0). LP-Jim Merritt. HR-Bob Robertson(14).

The homestand continues, as the Chicago Cubs come into town. Game one will pit Milt Pappas against Luke Walker.
