GRANT BAILS OUT GIUSTI AS BUCS COP NARROW WIN OVER CUBS
Pittsburgh held a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning, when Dave Giusti imploded. He surrendered back to back singles to Ken Rudolph and Jose Ortiz, with Rudolph moving to third on Ortiz’s hit. Joe Pepitone then pinch hit and stroked a double, scoring Rudolph, however Ortiz had to stop at third.
With runners on second and third and no outs, the Pirates called on Mudcat Grant, in an extremely high leverage situation. He promptly retired, Don Kessinger, Glenn Beckert and Billy Williams, in order, to notch the save, for starting pitcher, Luke Walker. Richie Hebner and Roberto Clemente each had a single and a double, while, Al Oliver stroked his eighth home run of the season. WP-Luke Walker(6-2). LP-Milt Pappas. HR-Al Oliver(8).
