STARGELL’S 2 RUN HR IN BOTTOM OF 9TH CAPS DRAMATIC 5-4 WIN OVER CARDS
Willie Stargell had three straight strikeouts in his first three at bats. He finally reached on a walk in the seventh, but went one better, smashing a two run, game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth, to complete an improbable, 5-4, comeback win over St. Louis.
The Cardinals were poised to hand Dock Ellis his first loss of the season, as they led, 4-2 after six innings, when Dock’s day was done. However, Bob Veale came on and held St. Louis at bay for the next two innings, striking out five in the process.
Meanwhile, Al Oliver led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, off reliever, Darryl Patterson, bringing the Bucs to within one run.
St. Louis had Moe Drabowsky on the hill in the final inning. Vic Davalillo singled to right. Roberto Clemente flew out to left field, then Stargell stepped up and ended the thrilling game with one swing of the bat. WP-Dave Giusti(1-2). LP-Moe Drabowsky. HR-Willie Stargell(16). Al Oliver(10).
The two clubs get back at it today, with Reggie Cleveland facing Luke Walker.
